En 1989, Walker Percy, autor de El cinéfilo, le escribió una carta a Bruce Springsteen. Años después, el sobrino de Percy entrevistó a Springsteen. Hablaron, entre otras cosas, de Robert Frank y Flannery O’Connor:
“Las lecturas realmente importantes empezaron en mis últimos años como veinteañero, con autores como Flannery O’Connor. Me parecía que había algo en los relatos de esa mujer que capturaban una parte del carácter americano sobre el que me interesaba escribir. Fueron una gran revelación.
